3 Stable Alternatives to Windows Explorer

3 Stable Alternatives to Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer Alternatives windows searchEvery time you transfer a file, browse your drive, or look for something you downloaded, you have to contend with Windows Explorer, the default file manager in Windows. While it is usable most of the time, nothing is more annoying than doing a file transfer in the order of several gigabytes only to have Windows Explorer stop responding and crash. At this point, you ask yourself, “Is there a more stable alternative?” In fact there is. The following are three stable alternatives to Windows Explorer.

1: CubicExplorer

Windows Explorer Alternatives - cubicexplorer

CubicExplorer may seem complex at first, but you’ll get used to it in a jiffy. Its right-hand panel shows you the contents of the folder you’re currently browsing. The right-hand area is for navigation, and the top right-hand box is especially designed to let you add places you want to reach quickly without having to fuss around and browse for them.

CubicExplorer is a tabbed browser, meaning you can open new explorer tabs instead of having to open a new window. This is especially great if, like me, you need to keep a large number of folders open simultaneously during a work day. The developer has also announced the possibility of quickly previewing PDF, XPS, CHM, CBR, CRZ, and DjVu files without having to actually open them.

2: Explorer++

Windows Explorer Alternatives - explorer++

Besides having one of the coolest interfaces ever, Explorer++ really trumps everything else as a completely portable Explorer alternative. In other words, you can just carry the EXE file in a flash drive and run it from any computer. Explorer++ has a tabbed interface, much like CubicExplorer. It may not be as feature-rich as other alternatives to Windows Explorer, but it sure beats using clunky old Explorer on every computer you use.

Explorer++ comes with two different versions â€" 32-bit and 64-bit. Make sure you use the version that matches your computer’s architecture. In the likely event that you’ll be using a computer with a bit width other than what you have at home, put both versions into your flash drive.

3: MultiCommander

Windows Explorer Alternatives - multicommander

Perhaps the most famous and most used Explorer alternative, MultiCommander is the application that does it all. Like Explorer++, it provides a portable version (created by the installable version). And, like both of the previously mentioned alternatives, MultiCommander gives you a tabbed interface (only the tabs appear on the bottom).

There are a lot of quick access buttons and gizmos here. The interface isn’t as elegant as the two previous alternatives, but there’s a lot more you can do with this mammoth application such as rename multiple files, access the registry, work with FTP servers, and navigate folders like a boss. It’s much easier to compile a list of what you can’t do with MultiCommander. If you don’t mind the crowded interface and work a lot with Explorer, this program will be the biggest relief for you.

Feedback

Let’s hear what you have to say about these alternatives to Windows Explorer! If you know of any other utilities that can blow these out of the water, don’t hesitate to comment here! If you have a question about any of them, we’d like to hear that too.

Swapps: An Alternative Multitasking App For Android

Swapps: An Alternative Multitasking App For Android

Swapps FIf using gestures to access apps in Android is not to your liking, then you might be interested in Swapps for a alternative multitasking experience in Android.

Swapps allows the users to switch and access different apps with minimum effort. You just have to swipe in from the left and you can quickly all your recent and favorite apps.

How it works

Swapps works by adding an invisible app drawer on the side of the screen. By swiping from right to left or left to right, the app drawer will show up and you can access your favorite app. With Swapps, you can add up to 15 applications to your favorites list. If you want, you can even customize the height and width of the app drawer as well.

Using Swapps

1. install Swapps from the Google Play Store. Make sure you are running Android 2.3+ for the application to work properly.

2. Once installed, all you have to do is swipe from left to right or vice versa and it will bring the App Drawer. By default, the sidebar contains 3 sections:

  • Recently Used
  • Starred
  • All apps
    • The “Starred Apps” section contains the list of your favorite apps that you access regularly. The “All Apps” section contains the list of all the installed apps and lastly, the “Recently Used Apps” section contains list of last used apps.

The best thing about the drawer is that you can access it anywhere, even if you are playing game on your phone.

      Swapps Sidebar

The best thing about Swapps is that it is customizable as well. You can change the number of apps you want to display in your Starred list as well as the option to remove the “Recently Used Apps” and “All Apps” section so only your favorite apps appear in the drawer. There is also options for you to customize the size and width of the drawer, as well as its location on the screen.

      Swapps Settings

      Conclusion

If you are looking to expand the multitasking capability in your Android phone, Swapps is one of the more handy apps around. Personally, I prefer to use Swapps over the native “Recent Apps ” button as it allows me to access my favorite apps quickly. What about you? Which apps do you use to improve the multitasking feature in Android?

MediaFire Rolls Out Redesigned Interface For Cloud Storage Service [Updates]

MediaFire Rolls Out Redesigned Interface For Cloud Storage Service [Updates]

The business of storing files in the cloud is competitive, and MediaFire is looking to take a chunk of the business from DropBox and Google with a huge update that brings a brand new interface and a focus on collaboration. This should come in handy for many users. Not to mention, the company is offering 50GB of free storage space that is good for a lifetime, so there is no need for users to run out and update their account to keep the large amount of storage.

The new design features a clean file management home-screen that should make it easier for users to get in, find what they need and move along with their day. The update also adds a new feature designed to make managing photos a smoother process. It allows users to view and share their photos quickly.

A huge part of this update is improvements to the document editor. It allows users to collaborate and work on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly in their web browser. While Google offers similar features with Google Drive, many users are more comfortable with Office file types, and this update for MediaFire has them covered.

The update also adds a native text editor for users looking to edit source code and simple text files directly from the cloud sharing service’s website.

All of this works with MediaFire’s desktop applications for OSX, Windows and Linux. The company also has applications available on iOS and Android, which should make it easy for users to get access to their files anywhere.

Are you going to try MediaFire, or you happy with your current cloud storage solution? Do you prefer to avoid the cloud altogether? Hit the comments section below and let us know!

Smartwatch: The Next Big Thing?

Smartwatch: The Next Big Thing?

Smartwatch-LogoNow that we have filled our lives with with smartphones and tablets, the mobile industry isn’t satisfied. They want to keep selling us devices. The next device to follow is the smartwatch. Timepieces aren’t just for telling time anymore.

Smartphones connect back to a smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing them to play music, videos and even work with apps. They come with a range of functions to allow everything you wanted a digital watch to do previously. Additionally, they can allow smartphone functions to be even more convenient. Instead of digging your phone out of your pocket, you can access the function right on your wrist.

In truth, it’s not a completely new idea. Computer watches date back as far as 1984, being compatible with Commodore 64s, IBM PCs, and Apple IIs. Things have changed a lot in thirty years, though. We don’t want the same capabilities we have on our computers. We want the same capabilities we have on our mobile phones. The Sony SmartWatch connects back to Android, allowing you to read texts, emails, and social networking, and also utilizes apps.

The newest smartphone out is the Pebble E-Paper Watch. It became the most highly-funded Kickstarter project, raising over $ 10 million. The biggest immediate difference from the Sony SmartWatch is that it works with both Android and Apple’s iOS. Apparently Pebble wanted to make sure they didn’t leave the Apple f ans out of the excitement.

Smartwatch-Pebble

It doesn’t look like Apple fans would have been left out anyway. Apple has always been a company to keep their projects on the “down-low,” but Apple quietly applied for a patent back in 2011. It’s for a device worn on the wrist that has a flexible touchscreen display that connects via Bluetooth or WiFI. It’s being coined the iWatch, of course.

Smartwatch-Patent

All of this could just make wearing a watch cool again. Many people stopped wear ing watches, as the need just wasn’t there. With cell phones coming in and out of the pocket so often, it’s easy just to check the time then. However, smartwatches not only equal that convenience, they add to it by adding all the additional functionality. You can now glance at your wrist to check Facebook statuses or to see if someone returned your text.

Wristwatches have somehow gone from a forgotten accessory to the newest tech gadget. The smartwatch somehow taps into what the tech world is desiring. They are kitschy, geeky, useful, and convenient. It could be an interesting trend to follow. If they end up saturating the market, what will be the next device?
